Smoking Safety Evaluation
UPDATED 2023
Briggs Smoking Safety Evaluation has been expanded to include evaluation of the resident that smokes electronic cigarettes as well as tobacco products or marijuana (in accordance with local or state laws).
It provides prompts to evaluate the resident's memory, judgment, mobility, manual dexterity, balance and reflexes as well as communication abilities and direct observation of the resident while smoking.
For the resident who smokes, this evaluation should be conducted upon admission, quarterly, annually, during a significant clinical change (including cognition) and whenever fire safety is/may be compromised for the resident or others in the facility.
The IDT will utilize this data and in conjunction with the resident, family or resident representative, make an informed decision on the ability of the resident to smoke unsupervised, supervised, assisted or not smoke/vape at all.
Additional prompts are provided for inclusion on the resident-centered care plan, for example, use of smoking apron or other safety device, charging and replacement of the battery for the electronic cigarette device, education and potential referrals. Comments pertinent to the evaluation are also recorded on the form.
