QSO-24-08-NH Enhanced Barrier Precautions in Nursing Homes, effective April 1, 2024.

On March 20, 2024, CMS released QSO-24-08-NHand subsequent nursing home regulation in response to the CDC’s most recently updated guidance on July 12, 2022, for the Implementation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Use in Nursing Homes to Prevent Spread of Multidrug-resistant Organisms (MDROs).

“CMS is issuing new guidance for State Survey Agencies and long-term care (LTC) facilities on the use of enhanced barrier precautions (EBP) to align with nationally accepted standards. EBP recommendations now include use of EBP for residents with chronic wounds or indwelling medical devices during high-contact resident care activities regardless of their multidrug-resistant organism status. In July 2022, the CDC released updated EBP recommendations for ‘Implementation of PPE Use in nursing homes to prevent spread of MDROs,’ and therefore, CMS is updating its infection prevention and control guidance accordingly.” LEARN MORE

This precaution sign provides guidance for PPE use in nursing homes for preventing transmission of CDC-targeted MDROs during high-contact resident care activities and the care/use of indwelling medical devices that have been found to increase risk for MDRO transmission.
