Brief Interview for Mental Status (BIMS)
Updated 2023
The Brief Interview for Mental Status (BIMS) provides a baseline for level of cognition and to provide specific evidence or any change in cognition when administered periodically. This structured cognitive test is more accurate and reliable than observation alone for observing cognitive performance.
This form provides for documentation of the resident interview. It also includes (on the reverse side) the staff assessment for mental status when the resident is unable to complete the BIMS interview.
Staff assessing cognitive status will utilize either the BIMS interview or the staff assessment.
